Please forgive this intrusion into your your truly wonderful classroom reflections. Please let any of your colleagues know that we are currently accepting applications for GK-12 Fellows for next year. Information on how to apply follows.
Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) Program
The GK-12 Program provides funding to graduate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines to acquire additional skills that will broadly prepare them for professional and scientific careers in the 21st century. The GK-12 Program can help you develop an enhanced ability to communicate science and research to a variety of audiences. The program provides general education and training in communication, management, and leadership to assist graduate students in their preparation for career roles and complement the specialized education and training provided in their research programs. Graduate fellows in the program work to inspire transformation in the K-12 formal and informal learning environments and stimulate interest in science and engineering among students and teachers. The transformation is achieved by working with local middle school teachers and students to increase their STEM field understanding, and through working with KU students pursuing secondary teacher licensure for math or science enrolled in the UKanTeach program as they create research projects and design project-based instruction.
Who is eligible to apply?
It is required by the National Science Foundation that students be active graduate students in engineering, natural sciences and/or mathematics and that they be U.S. Citizens. Students need to be enrolled in a graduate program at KU and be interested in personal development and lifelong learning.
What is the time commitment?
Students will need to commit 15 hours a week as a fellow. This includes one full day of working in area classrooms and weekly seminar and development courses.
When does the funding start?
Can I have an appointment as a GTA or GRA and also be a GK-12 Fellow?
Yes, students are welcome to have a joint appointment as long as they have permission from the department where they are appointed as a GTA or GRA.
Applications are due: March 5, 2012
